Men are more likely to commit serious crimes, be arrested, and go to jail. Women commit fewer serious offenses, are less likely to be jailed, and make up only 4% of the prison population. Both male and female crime rates have decreased, with men being arrested, prosecuted, and imprisoned at higher rates. Women receive lighter sentences and are more likely to receive community service.
